Certificate in Islamic Chaplaincy
Earning a Graduate Certificate in Islamic Chaplaincy can be a great option as an alternative to the full MDiv degree.
- If you already have a Master’s or post-graduate degree in religious studies or a related field, and want to gain a foundation in chaplaincy and spiritual care, the certificate can enhance your professional profile and help you become eligible for chaplaincy-oriented positions in institutions.
- Even if you don’t have a graduate degree or any plans to pursue a Master’s in chaplaincy, a certificate can enhance your career and lead to new opportunities.
- Starting in the certificate program can be a great way to take graduate courses at Bayan and better understand the field. You can transfer up to 12 units (4 courses) from the certificate into a full degree program, or complete the remaining 6 units and earn the certificate.
Course Requirements
The certificate requires completing the following 3-unit courses:
Courses offered by CTS:
- Introduction to Chaplaincy Studies (Dr. Zachary Moon)
- Living into Our Commitments (Dr. Rachel Mikva)
- One CTS chaplaincy/spiritual care elective
Courses offered by Bayan:
- Theories and Practices of Spiritual Care
- Facilitating Islamic Life Cycle Rituals
- One Bayan chaplaincy/spiritual care elective
Depending on the scheduling of the above courses, and the preferred course load of the student, the chaplaincy certificate can be completed in 2-4 terms (roughly one academic year). Some courses must be taken when offered in the Summer term.
Course Format
A number of courses are offered in a fully-online format, involving weekly self-paced work online throughout the term, with a few live online meetings with the instructor and classmates. Some courses, however, are offered only in a “hybrid-intensive” format, in which most of the contact time with instructors takes place in-person on campus in Chicago during one week scheduled during the middle of the term. These intensives also involve several live online meetings before and after the intensive week.
